The level of awareness of Asbestos Containing Materials in the Construction Industry is still so inconsistent. The government has again attempted to raise awareness via the HSE. We have known about the affects of Asbestos on our bodies for over 50 years with first suspicions recorded by Pliny the Elder in 500 AD so why is there still ignorance? Of course this is a rhetorical question!
Although very different do you remember the HIV adverts in the 90's-where are these adverts now. Sorry, an odd comparison I know but just looking at similarities of the awareness roller coaster that we witness in our business.
Upon the request of a client we have developed a Stihl Saw Awareness course providing a combination of classroom and practical demonstration and tuition. Each delegate is required to use the equipment and is assessed for competency. The course is led by a qualified Safety Practitioner and competent Technician.
I genuinely have a passion to reduce risk in the workplace and spend time on significant and real risk. You noticed I said "real" risk-what I am eluding to is the fact that so many in our business seem to be spending time on chasing numbers and statistics and spending time on admin tasks to ensure the boxes are ticked! Although I understand and indeed promote the need for proper analysis and reporting it so easy to get caught up in work that really does not make a real difference-so for the sake of real safety lets all focus on our significant risks and do all we can to control them-please ask yourself what can I really implement this week and month that will reduce risk.....sorry for the Friday ramble
...safety made simple
_Safety Solutions have just finished developing a Safety IT system that enables the client to push out Safety bulletins to staff emails with a downloadable link. Nothing new there I hear you reply. Well the system allows the client to prove that the downloadable link has been downloaded by the recipient or not. So at the end of the month or more frequently if you need, the client can produce an exception report of those persons that have not read/downloaded the required information and these respective persons can be reminded of this requirement. This does give a useful form of evidence and shows due diligance for any company distribution of important information
_Safety Solutions have recently developed an Environmental Awareness training course aimed to increase general awareness for Project Managers and related roles that need to have knowledge of WEEE regulations (The Waste Electrical and Electronic Regulations 2011) and be clear of all their Environmental obligations. If you would like a synopsis of the half day course please let me know.
At last this part of our industry will be monitored through the Institute of Fire Engineers. Although being on
the list is not mandatory, it will give our clients the chance refer to an approved list or at least understand the competences that they should be looking for in a good fire risk assessor.
